Car & SUV Smog Check

Smog check, smog test and emission check all refer to the same thing: a test of vehicle and its engine emissions performed at a licensed smog testing facility. Smog checks are regulated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), whose goal is to protect public health and the environment from the dangerous effects of air pollution. In 1990, the Clean Air Act gave the EPA its authority to oversee states with respect to emissions. The best way to determine if your state, city or county requires a smog check is to go to your state DMV website.

Diesel Smog Check

The Diesel Smog Check visual inspection begins with identifying the emissions components that were originally manufactured to be on the diesel vehicle. This is done by checking the vehicles emissions catalyst label. If the catalyst label is missing, then the smog check inspector must look in the emissions guide to determine the original equipment emissions components that were installed on the vehicles. Below list the common emissions devices that are installed on a diesel vehicle.

Hybrid Smog Check

Hybrids are designed to meet strict emission standards and to provide improved fuel economy over conventional vehicles. However, hybrid emission control systems experience the same causes of long-term deterioration affecting other vehicles. Emission control system malfunctions on hybrids can cause emissions to sharply increase. By ensuring that hybrid emission-related problems are identified and then properly repaired, emission levels will remain low over the life of the vehicle.

RV Smog Check

RV smog checks cost more than a normal sized vehicle. The reason being, smog stations that can accommodate RVs and motor homes pay higher rent due to square footage. Smog stations that accommodate RVs need a bigger space in order to fit different sized RVs ranging from 20 to 45 feet. Also, performing the smog check on an RV is more time considering the “dog house” or engine cover that might need to be removed as well as visually checking the smog components is more difficult due to access.

Gross Polluter Certification

Gross Polluters—These are the worst polluting vehicles on the road and pollute much more than a typical failing vehicle. Gross Polluter Standards vary according to the age and type of vehicle. For example, a 1987-92 vehicle that is a Gross Polluter pollutes an average of 18 times more than the average Passing Vehicle for that category. These vehicles also usually have a high level of deterioration and/or a major system defect or tampered emission control system that needs repair.

Truck Smog Check

A smog check includes inspection of a vehicle’s exhaust and pollution control systems. To receive a pass certificate, all parts and components must be up to standard. In a typical test, results are based on the following criteria:

  • Visual Inspection - of all emission control components and systems.
  • Functional inspection - of the vehicle’s On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) system, check engine light, ignition timing, exhaust gas recirculation system, fuel evaporative system, and gas cap.
  • Emissions Inspection – of tailpipe emissions.
